The Eastern Foothills of the Helan Mountains Wine Region, Ningxia


Geographical Location:

Located in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China, the Helan Mountain's East Foothill wine region lies on the eastern side of the Helan Mountains, at the junction of the Yellow River alluvial plain and the Helan Mountain diluvial fan. With abundant sunshine, significant diurnal temperature variations, and well-drained soils, it is recognized as one of the world's premier grape-growing golden zones.

Wine Region

Climatic Conditions:

  • Ample Sunshine: Over 3,000 hours of annual sunshine ensure optimal grape ripening.
  • Large Diurnal Temperature Variation: Daily temperature fluctuations exceeding 15°C help grapes accumulate sugars while retaining acidity.
  • Moderate Rainfall: Annual precipitation of around 200 mm, supplemented by Yellow River irrigation, prevents excessive humidity.

Soil Characteristics:
The region features predominantly sandy and gravelly soils, rich in minerals with excellent drainage—ideal for vine root growth and imparting distinctive terroir characteristics to the wines.

Grape Varieties & Wine Styles:
Key wine grape varieties cultivated include:

  • Red Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz, Marselan, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, etc.
  • White Grapes: Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier, etc.
Wines are celebrated for their full-bodied richness, refined tannins, and pronounced fruitiness, with dry reds in particular earning numerous international accolades.

Industry Development:
As one of China's most promising wine regions, the area hosts many premium wineries, such as Silver Heights, Li’s Winery, Heyu Estate, the starting Point, and Jade Vineyard, etc. In recent years, its wines have frequently won gold medals at global competitions, establishing the region as a flagship for Chinese viticulture.

In 2021, Ningxia Helan Mountain's East Foothill was designated a "World Wine Tourism Destination" by UNESCO. Wines from multiple local wineries have achieved high scores at prestigious competitions like the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) and the Brussels International Wine Competition (CMB).
